1. Mr. Brightside – The Killers
Possibly the most reliable crowd-pleasing tune ever written. The riff is instantly recognisable and once the chorus starts, everyone is singing.
Fun Fact: Released in 2004, it only reached No. 10 in the UK charts, but is still regularly voted the UK’s ultimate indie anthem.
2. Don’t Stop Me Now – Queen
Few songs capture pure joy quite like this classic. Freddie Mercury’s incredible vocals and the unstoppable piano make it impossible to sit still.
Fun Fact: Released in 1978, the song had a huge come back after appearing in the pub scene in zombie comedy ‘Shaun of the Dead’.
3. Summer of ’69 – Bryan Adams
A nostalgic rock banger that casts everyone back to their carefree youth – regardless of when they were actually born.
Fun Fact: Released in 1985, Bryan Adams was actually only nine years old in the summer of 1969!
4. Go Your Own Way – Fleetwood Mac
This Fleetwood Mac’s track remains one of their greatest. Made for driving with the windows down, it somehow manages to feel both emotional and uplifting at the same time.
Fun Fact: Released in 1976, the song was written by Lindsey Buckingham about his breakup with Stevie Nicks — who still had to perform it alongside him on stage for decades afterwards.
5. Take Me Home, Country Roads – John Denver
There may not be another song on earth that gets an entire room singing faster than this one. Warm, comforting and timeless, it’s become a universal anthem.
Fun Fact: West Virginia officially adopted ‘Take Me Home’ as one of its state songs despite John Denver not being from there.
6. Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond
No one knows why crowds lose their minds during “BA BA BAAA”, but it happens every single time. This classic has become part song, part sporting event tradition and part social experiment in seeing who can sing the loudest.
Fun Fact: Neil Diamond revealed the song was inspired by Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President John F. Kennedy, after seeing a childhood photograph of her in a magazine.
7. Dakota – Stereophonics
One of the defining indie-rock tracks of the 2000s. The atmospheric guitar intro builds into a huge chorus that feels tailor-made for festivals, road trips and sitting in the garden pretending British weather is reliable.
Fun Fact: Released in 2005, it became Stereophonics’ first ever UK No. 1 single.
8. Parklife – Blur
One of Britpop’s most iconic tracks. It’s quirky, catchy and impossible not to smile at, especially once the cockney spoken-word sections kick in.
Fun Fact: English Actor Phil Daniels of Quadrophenia fame performs the spoken word verses and appears in the video too.
9. Town Called Malice – The Jam
Fast-paced and packed with energy, the iconic 80s bassline alone is enough to make people start tapping their feet within seconds.
Fun Fact: In 1982, this tune went straight to UK No. 1 and famously kept David Bowie’s “Golden Years” off the top spot during its re-release.
10. Walking on Sunshine – Katrina and the Waves
This upbeat classic sounds like sunshine, summer holidays and good news all rolled into one song. It’s almost impossible to hear it without feeling slightly happier afterwards.
Fun Fact: The song became so widely used in films, adverts and TV that it reportedly earned the band millions. This includes appearances in films such as: “High Fidelity”, “American Psycho” and, “Look Who’s Talking”.
11. Come On Eileen – Dexys Midnight Runners
Starting slowly before exploding into one of the most energetic choruses ever recorded, this track has become a guaranteed dancefloor filler. The sudden tempo change still catches people off guard decades later.
Fun Fact: The song knocked Billie Jean off No. 1 in the US charts in 1983 — one of the few songs to interrupt Jackson’s dominance that year.
12. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) – The Proclaimers
By the end of the chorus, we know dads will be challenging everyone to be either clapping, shouting along or attempting a Scottish accent.
Fun Fact: Craig Reid wrote the song in just 45 minutes while waiting to leave an Edinburgh flat for a gig in Aberdeen.
13. Piano Man – Billy Joel
A storytelling masterpiece that paints the picture of an old-school bar full of unforgettable characters.
Fun Fact: Billy Joel was inspired to write this song when he was performing under a fake name at a Los Angeles piano bar after an early record deal went wrong.
14. Don’t Look Back in Anger – Oasis
The opening piano notes alone are enough to trigger an immediate group chorus, whether you’re at a festival, in the pub or just dancing in the kitchen.
Fun Fact: This was the first Oasis single sung by Noel Gallagher instead of Liam in 1996!
15. Africa – Toto
Huge harmonies, soft-rock grooves and gloriously over-the-top lyrics about rains, drums and distant continents. This one is a dad Karaoke classic
Fun Fact: “Africa” featured an unusual combination of instruments, including a kalimba (African thumb piano) and a 12-string acoustic guitar provided by Timothy B. Schmit, of the Eagles.
16. Life Is a Highway – Tom Cochrane
This song belongs on a motorway playlist with the windows down, snacks in the passenger seat and at least one person (usually dad), badly drumming on the dashboard.
Fun Fact: After seeing hunger and poverty in Africa, Cochrane said he wrote the song as a “pep talk” to remind himself that he couldn’t control everything, but he could do his best.
17. Dreams – Fleetwood Mac
Smooth, relaxed and effortlessly cool, “Dreams” somehow sounds modern no matter how many decades pass.
Fun Fact: Written by Stevie Nicks, this song was a reply to Lindsey Buckingham’s angry “Go Your Own Way,” both chronicling the former couple’s breakup.
18. Take It Easy – Eagles
Easy-going California rock at its finest. The laid-back vibe makes it perfect for summer evenings, long drives or pretending you’re far more relaxed than you actually are.
Fun Fact: Take it Easy is listed as one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
19. Rocket Man – Elton John
Elton John has countless classics, but “Rocket Man” remains one of his most iconic. Emotional cinematic and powerful, they definitely don’t write them like this anymore.
Fun Fact: ‘Rocket Man’ was inspired by a short science fiction story by Author Ray Bradbury, who also wrote ‘Fahrenheit 451’.
20. Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen
No playlist is complete without this legendary masterpiece. Part rock song, part opera, “Bohemian Rhapsody” is less of a song and more of an air guitar, head banging experience.
Fun Fact: Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the best-selling songs of all time and returned to the charts after appearing in cult film ‘Wayne’s World’.
The perfect dad playlist needs a little bit of everything: road trip anthems, BBQ classics, emotional singalongs and songs that immediately make people turn the volume up. These 20 tracks have stood the test of time for a reason, they’re timeless, crowd-pleasing and guaranteed to soundtrack countless summer evenings for years to come.
