Rea penned this classic about a traffic jam he was in on the way home to Middlesbrough from London. Since it first charted in 1988, it’s been a yearly hit ever since!
2. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas – Frank Sinatra
Originally written for Judy Garland in the 1944 musical Meet Me in St. Louis. Frank Sinatra later recorded a version with cheerier lyrics in 1957 to give us this timeless, velvety classic.
3. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! – Dean Martin
American crooner Dean Martin released a version of this song in 1966, as part of The Dean Martin Christmas Album. While it doesn’t mention Christmas, the cosy winter vibes are perfect for getting in a festive mood.
4. Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree – Brenda Lee
Johnny Marks wrote this Rockabilly Christmas banger, as well as writing “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “A Holly Jolly Christmas“! Add to this Brenda Lee was just 13 when she recorded it in 1958! What a talented pair and a great festive bop.
5. It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year – Andy Williams
This happy tune was first released in 1963 by pop singer Andy Williams for his first Christmas album, The Andy Williams Christmas Album. It’s pure Christmas joy.
6. All I Want for Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey
No Christmas playlist would be complete without Mariah. The 1994 hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has now reached number one in over 30 countries!
7. It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas – Michael Bublé
Written in 1951, this cosy Christmas favourite has been sung by many artists over the years. We love the smooth sweet 2011 version, delivered with Michael Bublé’s signature charm.
8. Jingle Bell Rock – Bobby Helms
First released in 1957, this bouncy festive tune has been covered again and again. We like the original the best though.
9. Underneath the Tree – Kelly Clarkson
Kelly Clarkson won American Idol in 2002, and since then she has racked up a haul of hits. “Underneath the Tree” is her modern Christmas anthem — full of soaring vocals, festive energy and pure joy.
10. What Christmas Means to Me – John Legend & Stevie Wonder
John Legend and Stevie Wonder’s duet of appears on Legend’s 2018 album A Legendary Christmas, updating Wonder’s 1967 classic with his original harmonica, piano, and vocals.
11. Baby, It’s Cold Outside – Frank Sinatra & Dorothy Kirsten
Many artists have covered this song including Bing Crosby and Doris Day, and Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews. Frank Sinatra and Dorothy Kirsten’s original 1949 version is a vintage, romantic Christmas duet.
12. One More Sleep – Leona Lewis
According to The Independent, Leona Lewis’s 2013 hit is the most streamed British Christmas song of the 21st century, with over 190 million UK streams and a peak at number three on the singles chart!
13. The Power of Love – Frankie Goes to Hollywood
This 1984 single is often considered a Christmas song despite its lyrics not mentioning the holiday. Possibly due to its Nativity-themed music video and release date of November 19th. It spent one week at number one in the UK, second only to Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas?
14. Last Christmas – Wham!
George Michael wrote and recorded this smooth Christmas groove in 1984.Band Aid beat it to the top spot. However, 39 years later in 2023, it finally reached number one! Artists including Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Whigfield, Crazy Frog and Billie Piper have covered it.
15. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday – Wizzard
A festive rock favourite released in 1973, it only ever reached number 4 in the charts. The song was beaten to the Christmas Number 1 spot by Slade‘s “Merry Xmas Everybody“. We still think it’s peak glam rock and deserves a spot on the list!
16. Merry Christmas Everyone – Shakin’ Stevens
1985’s Christmas number one is bright, fun and instantly recognisable. Hailing from Wales, Shakin’ Stevens actually recorded the single in 1984. The creators delayed its original release by a year to avoid clashing with Band Aid‘s charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”
17. Wonderful Christmastime – Paul McCartney
Sir Paul McCartney, an ex-Beatle, released this Christmas song in 1979. It has reached the top 10 in the UK, Austria, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, and the Netherlands. Over the years, numerous artists have covered this cheery Christmas staple.
18. Stay Another Day – East 17
Recorded by British boy band East 17 and released on 21 November 1994, the song has no Christmas lyrics but beat Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You to become that year’s UK Christmas number one.
19. Do They Know It’s Christmas? – Band Aid
The writers created this 1984 charity song to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia. The original track featured artists such as Boy George and members of Spandau Ballet, Kool and the Gang and Status Quo. It was number one for 5 weeks and raised £8 million.
20. Snowman – Sia
Australian singer-songwriter Sia released this song in November 2017, with a cute Claymation video of snowmen in 2020. This made it blow up on TikTok, and people now consider it a modern Christmas classic.
21. Somewhere Only We Know – Lily Allen
Lily Allen’s gentle, nostalgic cover of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” shot to fame in 2013 when it featured on the much anticipated John Lewis Christmas advert.
22. Feliz Navidad – José Feliciano
With just 19 words used throughout, 1970’s hit ‘Feliz Navidad’ is a bright and joyous festive favourite. It’s title simply means ‘Merry Christmas’
