UK Airports New 100ml Liquids Rule 2024: What you Need to Know

29/07/2024

You may have seen that airports are planning to get rid of the 100ml or under liquids rule in the UK. The Department of Transport (DoT) initially set a deadline of 1st June 2024 for airports to upgrade security scanners and scrap the liquids rule. However, in April 2024, it was clear this wouldn’t be possible, and the deadline was extended.

7 UK international airports recently confirmed they’d completed the roll out of the new rules using 3D scanners. This would mean travellers could bring more than 100ml liquids and wouldn’t have to remove liquids or laptops from their cases. These included London City, Newcastle, Leeds/Bradford, Aberdeen, Southend, and Teesside.

Former Transport Secretary Mark Harper advised passengers to check the specific rules and processes at the airport they are leaving from.

Why has the 100ml liquid rule been reinstated?

The roll out of the new rule has since been reversed until further notice, due to long security queues making passengers miss flights. The new scanners, which are bigger and heavier than older versions, meant some airports had to reinforce the floors to take their weight an adapt the security area to fit them in.[1]

Why Do We Have the 100ml Liquid Rule at Airports?

Airports worldwide limit liquids, aerosols and gels in carry-on luggage to 100ml containers, up to 1000ml in total. These must be placed in a clear, resealable plastic bag (about 20cm x 20cm) and removed from your luggage for security scanning.

In 2006, a plot was foiled, when terrorists attempted to take 500ml bottles of hydrogen peroxide onto at least 10 planes to make a bomb. Ever since, passengers have only been allowed to carry 100ml of liquid onto planes and this rule has been adopted worldwide.[2]

How do the new 3D Scanners Work?

3D scanners use advanced x-ray technology to create detailed 3D images of a bag’s contents. This technology lets security staff see any potential threats without needing to unpack your hand luggage. This should mean a quicker security check.

Make Sure You Have Travel Insurance

This innovative approach to airport security aims to keep passengers safe and keep security queues moving. However, it’s always wise to protect yourself against potential disruptions. Investing in robust travel insurance can help cover you financially, ensuring that your journey is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Remember, travel insurance is not just an added expense; it’s a safeguard against the unexpected, providing coverage for various issues that can arise before, during, or after your trip. Consider purchasing a policy that suits your needs, whether it’s for a single trip or annual coverage for frequent flyers. With travel insurance, you can focus on enjoying your journey, knowing that you’re protected.
