Hacks to Maximise Your Annual Leave in 2025

18/03/2025

Legally in the UK, everyone who works a standard five-day week is entitled to 28 days annual leave. This amounts to 5.6 weeks’ paid holiday a year. If that doesn’t seem like enough, then we have the hacks for you! With a bit of strategic planning, you can make that 5.6 weeks feel like a lot more without burning through your annual leave.

Don’t forget to get travel insurance to protect yourself against unexpected events, and to give you peace of mind during your short trips. Here’s some tips to maximise your annual leave in 2025.

Use ‘Leave Stacking’ to Plan Around Bank Holidays and Weekends

'Bank Holiday' written in the sand

One of the best ways to maximise your travel time is by planning trips around bank holidays and weekends. If you book your annual leave wisely, you can take advantage of bank holidays to more than double your time off in some cases. This is known as ‘leave stacking’ and in 2025, there are several opportunities to do this, including:

Easter Weekend (18th – 21st April):
  • Book off: 8 days (Monday 14th April – Thursday 17th April & Tuesday April 22nd – Friday 25th April)
  • Time off: 16 consecutive days (Saturday 12th April – Sunday 27th April)

Early May Bank Holiday (3rd– 5th May):
  • Book off: 4 days (Tuesday 6th May – Friday 9th May)
  • Time off: 9 consecutive days (Saturday 3rd May – Sunday 11th May)

Spring Bank Holiday (24th– 26th May)
  • Book off: 4 days (Tuesday 27th May – Friday 30th May)
  • Time off: 9 consecutive days (Saturday 24th May – Sunday 1st June)

Summer Bank Holiday (23rd – 25th August)
  • Book off: 4 days (Tuesday 26th August – Friday 29th August)
  • Time off: 9 consecutive days (Saturday 23rd August – Sunday 31st August)

December Bank Holidays
  • Book off: 6 days (Monday 22nd December – Wednesday 24th December & Monday 29th December – Wednesday 31st December)
    Time off: 13 consecutive days (Saturday 20th December 2025 – Thursday 1st January 2026)
  • Bonus tip: If you also book off Friday 2nd January 2026, using your 2026 leave, you extend this to 16 consecutive days!
  • If you’re looking for something longer within the festive season you could get 9 days off with only 3 days Annual leave. Book Monday 22nd December – Wednesday 24th December off and you’ll be off work from Saturday 20thDecember – Sunday 28th December[1].

Note: Always check your contract for your companies holiday policy.
